DFB Cup Success of the HSV should give “buoyancy” for the league

The dream of the first cup victory after 35 years lives in the north. But as several times this season it went for the Hamburg SV also in the quarterfinals of the DFB Cup not without drama.

“In the cup we are lived that it goes into the extra time,” said DFB Cuping board Jonas Boldt after 3: 2 in penalties against the Karlsruher SC.

In fact, the HSV in this pokal season follows the law of the series. The KSC did not reach 120 minutes, previously against the 1st FC Cologne in the second round and against the 1st FC Nuremberg in the 2nd round, the target shoot of the penalty point had to make the decision. Only the starting round at the third division Eintracht Braunschweig had brought the hamburger with a narrow 2: 1 in the regular playing time. The series leaves the conclusion: the HSV needs the thrill.

What does that mean for the ascent race of the 2nd league? After the game in Braunschweig last August, the HSV conceded a bitter 2: 3 defeat in Prestige-duel against the city’s citytrival FC St. Pauli. The long October evening in Nuremberg followed four days later a 1: 1 against Holstein Kiel. Three days after the penalty thriller at the Bundesliga club 1. FC Cologne in January celebrated the HSV in the second leg against neighbor St. Pauli a 2: 1 after 0: 1 residue.

And now, on Saturday at the 1st FC Nuremberg? “That will give us buoyancy for the next weeks,” said Boldt and found, “We have a supermoral this season.” His team does not want to lose contact with the promotion places as a table.

On Sunday, the Cup semi-final will be drawn. As an opponent only one Bundesliga is in question: RB Leipzig, Union Berlin or the SC Freiburg. The lots are played on 19 and 20 April. “I would be glad if we can stay in Hamburg,” said Boldt. And then thousands of HSV fans want to Berlin: in the Olympic Stadium is on 21 May.
